scratch that one off the to-do list

When I saw this reminder on my desktop, it hit me: This is really going to happen. I am going to go to South America, live in a mist-shrouded town at the base of a volcano, and spend my summer volunteering at an arts and literacy non-profit. I keep saying to myself, This is some dream I’m having of the life I wish I were living. But there is evidence that this is, in fact, my life: I have my ticket, I have my room in the volunteer house reserved, and I have alerted the United States government of my plan. It’s all true. On May 22nd, I will set foot again in Ecuador. And until August 3rd, that is the only land my feet will know.

Speaking of which, I’ve been breaking in my new hiking boots in preparation for the three-hour hikes into tiny villages as part of the Rural Literacy Outreach program. These boots had better be comfortable, since I’ll be sporting a backpack full of books for the children. So far, no blisters.

I still have a lot to do and most of it is more complicated than just going for long walks. 54 days left to get it all done!
